I've got a 460 in my boat that I've had for about 2 weeks. The alternator is not charging at all it seems and I'm pretty sure it's wired wrong. It has one thick wire coming from the terminal block to the stud on the back of the alternator. The 2 wire plug on the side of the alternator just has the two wires coming out of the plug jumped together. So, there is only one wire going to the alternator. This can't be right, but it was wired like this when I got it. I'm assuming it's an internal V/R and it's the older style with a V pulley and external fan.
Can anyone help me figure out what's missing? This would be much easier if it was at least close to correct when I got the boat, but since it was like this when I got it, I'm a bit stumped!
Nah, wasn't trying to be mean just maybe threw in a little scarcasm is all =). I figured that if someone knew the answer they would have piped up. BUT, I turned out to be
the ******* anyway, my alternator (I found this out after I pulled it) turned out to be a Delco Remy (GM) so once I knew that (I know you can tell by looking at them I just wasn't thinking GM on a Ford) it was pretty easy. The doof that I got the boat from just had the jumper going in a loop instead of going to the hot terminal to "excite" the alternator. AND the alternator when hooked up correctly still wasn't charging but 11.5 volts so I went to the parts house and gots me anudder one! Problem solved. =D
