Unhappy Shake Rattle and Roll?

I've got a '96 F-150 (I6/5sp) regular cab. When I'm driving at a good speed (40 to 50) and apply the brakes the truck shakes and there is a loud (thunk, thunk, thunk) that accompanies the rattle. This only happens when slowing from speeds above 40. Around town it rarely does it but when I get off of the freeway its most noticeable.

I thought about warped rotors but haven't had the opprotunity to check them. I have crawled underneath and searched for the "loose" front end component but can't locate it.

Thanks!

If it only happens when braking, it pretty much has to be rotors.
