Hi guys. I just diagnosed my 86 F-150's hard starting problem this evening. Turns out the choke isn't working on my carb. The valve works easily, and it's even getting voltage to the choke actuator. It's only about 6 volts though. The carb is a single throat Carter on a 300-6. What do I need to do to correct this?
Also, how do I identify the carb on my engine? I'm pretty sure it needs a rebuild since my gas mpg is suckin. When I went to Advance for a rebuild kit they had two, for different carbs. Just wondering since I found three different numbers on that thing.
When your engine's warm, the choke should be wide open. After your engine cools down, the spring inside the automatic choke is going to tighten back up and that's going to try to close the choke back up. But the fast idle linkage holds it open, so you have to "load the choke" by pressing the pedal down, and that lets the choke close back up like it wants to.
Basically, when you want to start the motor cold, the choke should be closed after you press the gas. If you want to start the motor hot, the choke should be wide open.
Figure out which of the two your carb isn't doing, and we'll go from there.
It could have just been adjusted to not close by someone. I would try adjusting it to be closed when cold (not too tight, just to where it just closes all of the way) then start it up and see if it slowly opens ad the engine warms up.
