Starting/Ignition Problems

I'm running out of ideas on how to fix this issue. One day I jumped in the truck to find that when I turned the key the engine would not start. It seems as if all the positions on the key work except start. Turning the key still activates the pre-glow cycle and other accessories come to life, but the start position does nothing. I replaced the ignition switch and the ignition solenoid to no avail. The only way I can start the truck is to turn the key to the on position and then jump the terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver. Any ideas on any other possible causes?

Any thoughts on possible causes? Where do I begin with this?

Thank you for your help.

By the way, the truck is an '88 F-350 7.3L Diesel.

I forgot to mention that I replaced the neutral safety switch too. Didn't work. I even tried having someone try to turn the engine over while I moved the switch back and forth-- still didn't turn.

there is a switch located on the steering colum that has a metal rod that comes down from the key switch.as you turn the key the rod slides up and down ,if the switch that has 2 nuts holding it on has come loose ,the rod will not move down far enough to make the starter move.

ha, that'd be the one. Replace that. It's a common ford item. Usually you hit it to test it.

Already replaced it.

Could this be a problem with one of the fuseable links?

On my old 88, there was a recall from ford and they replaced a connector on the steering column. One of the wires burned inside the connector. There is what I had as a problem. Hope it helps. Make sure the activator wire on the solenoid is working when you activate the key switch.

The only thing that does happen when the key is turned to the start position is the temperature gauge climbs slowly to max, then drops back down when the key is released.

Don't know if its significant, just figured it may be worth mentioning.
