trans temp problem

I seached everywhere And I understand the correct temps for your tranny. But this happened to me while I was towing. I have a tranny temp gauge I installed in my 2001 f250 psd. The temp got up to 230 so I pulled over to cool it down. when I got out the fluid was pouring out of the small hole by the tranmission pan. When I went to the mechanic he said that was a release pressure hole when it gets to hot. I replaced the fluid and now thinking of getting a trans cooler, Has this happened to anyone yet????. And what kind of concerns do I have to worry about. I know people said that it's ok to reach 230 at short intervals. Thanks and I'm new with this forum.

Yep same happened to me after towing my 26' boat 40 miles, also blew out the front seal although I'm not sure the overheating caused the blow out. Tranny has 80k on it so it was probably time for a seal. Got me a tru-cool 4590 just haven't had time to put it in yet.

To keep your temps down, I would recommend a Tru-Cool and a deeper, extra capacity, aluminum tranny pan for maximum cooling and tranny protection.
Of course you could also add an external tranny filter.
