I didn't realize how loud my truck was till I started reading this thread. My ears were muffled by the new-truck smell. I do have to turn the truck off at a drive-thru. I have noticed, when fueling next to a Duramax, that my truck sounds like a Mack. It is a manly sound . However, I would prefer it a little quieter.
Besides reducing the noise level, does PI increase or decrease MPG, all other things being equal?....I currently get about 18MPG average.
BTW guys, just as a side not: I feel that the PI will be coming back, for I just read a lengthy article on the new Mercedes diesel car, coming to market now, with very good reviews on the engine and its PI system. Very very quiet engine.
Luke, my understanding is Ford/International never had a lock on the PI concept. I believe Mercedes uses Bosch electronics, including injection. Isuzu does as well, which is why the Chevy Duramax has working pilot injection. I further understand that the Bosch PI system is fully electronic, whereas the PSD uses high pressure oil to accomplish this. The bottom line is, just because other manufacturers have no problems with PI doesn't mean Ford's planning on bringing it back.
Just got a recall notice for 03E03. I guess they want to reflash my truck. It's an '03 delivered in April '03. I'm sure I have pilot injection (smoke, low power cold) but I love the power and mileage. Hate to lose either. Any possibility I might not, or am I doomed? Guess I could get an exhaust/Predator.
Always the possibility but you prabably will. Get the flash and a Predator. The tow mode will make it run like it did preflash. The 65 program will make it run a lot better with good mpg after you get over the "holy smoke this thing goes!" phase.
Mike
Why would you want to take the truck in for that "recall notice" without first determining specifically what it is going to do ?? BTW, what state are you in & what is the milege on the truck?
Not withstanding anything to the contrary contained herein,
I do not authorize any flashing/reflashing of any of this
Truck's computers; This prohibition is of the essence.
Since they are turning off the PI when doing the current re-flashes, would it be safe to assume the 05's will come from the factory without PI? I know many of you hope that one day they will fix the assumed problems with PI and then re-enable it with a newer flash (if it doesn't require new hardware). But, if the 05's come without it in the first place, I wonder if it would be in the same position to be turned on some day.
Luke
The info I found on this site tells me that the recall I got is regarding the PI and reflash. Great site! Of course I won't know exactly what the dealer is up to until I talk to the svc. dept. I live in NW Connecticut. With varied driving, I get between 17.5 and 20.5 mpg, my math - no computer.
as for 04's with p.i., and those production dates.....well, i have no proof, but reason to doubt you do indeed have it.
a good freind bought a 04 6.0l in late november, it DOES NOT and DID not have pilot injection, from the date of delivery.
not saying all do....but somehow i doubt ford keeps going back and forth..... imho, the ONLY 04's with pilot injection, were ones delivered with an 03 engine, PRIOR to sept 29 build dates!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry to rain on anyones parade, but if you got it, you got a rough idle when cold, smoke, and all the other problems that go with it.
flame on if you must, but it is what i belive to be the case
I'm with you. In all this I have not seen anything that would indicate that PI did not die with the C94 injector I was told that the c95 injector was a change in design and that the C95 injectors were not PI capable. The new injectors need a new flash. Everyone who has the C94 injectors and their original flash has PI. This is why you can't just go the the wrecking yard, buy a pre may 03 computer and plug it in. The c95s can not worK.
Someone please prove me wrong. I would very much like to be.
While getting my oil changed last week, the Diesel tech (certified) that changed my oil... and allowed me to watch, talk, and observe my vehicle had the following to say regarding pilot injection...
"Pilot injection was turned off due to the fact that the mechanical part of the injector could not keep up with the oil pressure and electrical signals "driving" the injector. The rough idle and poor performance was due tot he injector unable to keep up and interprete the information and oil pressure it was being given."
Failure (C94's and C95's) was due to this common issue and long-term effects for those that have not disabled PI is unknown. He went on to say that since Ford notified and/or provides re-flashing (re-programming) that at some point, failure to bring your truck in MAY (not will) result in non-warranty coverage. He went on to say that since Ford is aware of the problem and they either have or think they have a fix, they reserve the right to possibly deney coverage down the road if injector failure and "other issues" were not corrected when customers were notified."
He said he had no idea why they do not do a recall, but not every motor is experiencing problems, so they are reluctant to do a "widespread" recall for a percentage under their "to many problems level".
"That's what he said and I'm sticking to my story..."
i have a 01/04 with almost 2K miles wiht no real eninge problems....have rear main leak but have not taken it to dealer......ity has job2.....i NEED a 550 TWO WEEKS ago and can only find one that is job 1 here right now...i'm so scared. but i NEED IT NOW....i dont know if i should buy it....i
ll be honest....only reason i'm scared is b/c of the INFO on FTE.......
I ran into another 6.0 driver yesterday. He does not get on the Internet. He is happy as can be. He says he goes through a tank of fuel every two days. I think the number of people on this forum are a small minority. Not all of us are unhappy.
