I wanted some advice on where to set the timing. I have a 90 302 and the label under the hood says to set it at 10btdc. I have heard that if you advance it farther it will run better. Is this true, because I would like to get all that I can out of it.
I have heard that if you advance it too far you will hear a pinging. Today I adjusted it and was just moving it around to see what it would do.I took it up to 25btdc and never heard this pinging. Maybe I don't know what to listen for. What does this pinging sound like?
So I ended up setting it at 12btdc. And, yes I disconected the SPOUTwhen I did it.
Just out of curiousity I plugged the SPOUT back in and checked the timing. The computer had adjusted it to 20btdc. And when I reved the engine up to 2,000rpms it jumped up to 30btdc. Does all of this seem right?
Also, do you have to have the engine at a certain rpm when you set the timing?
Thanks Everyone.
all of that sounds right, the engine needs to be idle speed when you set the timing, but you will never hear any ping (sparknock) while its idleing, you will hear it going up the road, it will sound like the valves rattling hope this helps DW
Oh, so the pinging only happens under a load? I have heard some people say that they just advance the timing until it starts pinging and then they back it off. Is that the way to go?
Is it true that the more you advance the timing without the engine pinging the more power you get, or are there other adverse affects from advancing the timing?

The more timming u run, the higher octane u have to run, the ping is norm from too low an octane. Without prop mods, I wouldn't go past 15btdc.
Over-advanced timing also increases smog emissions, mostly CO. If you have smog checks in your area, the timing is something they are supposed to check.
