Recently acquired a 91 F-250 with a 7.3. Real fixer upper, but the price was right. Working in getting it to start when cold. New glow plugs, relay had been bypassed with manual switch. Starts like new when plugged in, am still investigating several items suggested here and on other sites.
My question for someone is how to set the valves? It has a slight miss and seems a little low on one cylinder when cranking over, want to start with valves first. Can anyone give me the correct procedure and specs? I know it has hydraulic lifters and there is no adjustment for lash, but there has to be a way of making sure the lifters are adjusted right.
Hydraulics, no adjusting. I believe the length of the pushtubes is the only adjusting there is. The miss could be an injector or air in the fuel system. A lot of times the return lines will leak internally and not show dampness or visible fuel leaking on the outside. Could also be the injection pump going south. Start with the getting the injectors tested at a pump shop and go from there.
Thanks for the reply. Found out after my last post where the miss is coming from. Took the truck out to steam off the engine, when I started it back up, there were little puffs of water vapor coming up near the front upper corner of the left cylinder head. I have a blown head gasket!! Oh, well, at least now I know where to start!
Anybody have suggestions or cautions as to doing the heads? I have access to the necessary machinery and am going to do a valve job while I have the heads off. Anything special to watch for?
