I hear that installing a chip will greatly improve the performance of my truck, but I'm not sure exactly what it does. Does it change the shift points of the transmission? If that is all, how could it improve MPG? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm new to PSD's, and want to know all I can.
Thanks in advance for your help in this.

I doubt if any of us really know all that a chip does but I can tell you this: The manufacturers have to abide by EPA regulations so they play it cautious by dialing back the fuel some and shifting the automatic transmission early (because of a particulates per mile regulation), among other things. A chip will revise the fuel maping in the computer which will give you more horse power and reprogram your shift points for your automatic transmission (if you have one). Most people realize a gain in fuel mileage as well. You may have to do some research to find out more -- that is about all I know about it.
Thanks, Joe, for your response. I took Monsta's advice and posted over on the chip board as well, and got a real clear answer, in case anyone else wants to follow the string.
