2001 Super, Highway vibration

2001 SuperCab, 4.6, 2WD, 5spd Manual. Any ideas here???

I experience an occasional vibration at highway speeds. Anywhere between 35-80 mph. The vibration will go on for a few minutes then gradually diminish. I am not sure where the origin is(front, back) and thought is was old tires (feels like a wheel is out of balance) Well, I'm sporting new treads now and the vibration still makes an appearance once or twice a week. Seems when I pull off the road into an exit and return to driving, the symptom disappears. Pushing the clutch in and coasting does not make a difference.

Thanks,

Milton

I had the same problem last night in my 2000 F150. I was going 80 and was switching lanes while curving to the left... I thought I was going to lose it into the right ditch... and the vibration was like wow... It has never done that before to me. so i think I might have the same problem as you...

I've had the same problem with my 2000 F-150 2wd. Vibration at 80-120km/hr. I've gotten the 2 front tires re-balanced, but that didn't solve the problem. Iv'e tried pushing in the clutch, gearing down speeding up but the vibration remains. The only thing that will stop it seems to be if I come to a complete stop or slow down to about 10km/hr.

NEED HELP!!

Hi MMCKENNY and welcome to the forum

All 3 of you are your vibrations high or low frequency?
Low frequency would be a like a shimmy. High frequency would be more like a buzz/hum type vibration.

It's is more like a shimmy. I've been driving with my windows down, and radio off, and I can't hear anything suspicious.

Typically a low frequency problem like a shimmy is tire or suspension related.
A high frequency vibration is driveline related.

Well, I took my truck into Ford again, whenever they take it for a test drive the truck drives fine (no vibration). They eneded up changing a rear U-joint, but that didn't solve the problem. I heard some loud squealing and clacking coming from somewhere the other day, but it only lasted a few minutes then went away and hasn't returned. I'm getting to the point where I think I'll just drive'r till she breaks!!!!

1999 Supercab 4x4 4.6L 5 spd, same/similar problem, a bouncing vibration (approx 10 Hz) at 41 MPH (not 39, not 43), feels like a car I had once with a bad universal joint, but it comes n goes, sometimes worse when coasting. Putting a load in the bed (800 lbs) moves the vibration to around 37 MPH. Dealer said "it's a stick shift, you'll feel more" but this is far beyond what I'd expect. This will spill coffee out of the cup in the cupholder, bounces the girls enough that they won't ride w/me. A horrible situation !

Would a sticking universal joint cause an intermittent problem like this ? perhaps the slip joint to the trans sticks and pushes U-joint to a particular angle ? Shocks that are worn and not damping the top 1/2 inch of travel, giving spring bounce ? (anyone know the rear spring frequency ?) I also get a rythmic "thump" from the rear axle when turning sharply at low speeds, like in a parking lot, so could this be related to a failing differential ?

Any help appreciated. Thanks !

Arrow Fixed my shimmy!!

My 99 f150 4x4 v8 5spd did the same thing for about a year. The occasional shimmy was driving me nuts, it would come and go, sometimes at 30mph, sometimes at 60. Would last for 20 or 30 seconds or until I slowed way down. I also went throught the tire routine, balance tires, replace tires, rebalance tires, change ujoints, check parking brakes (what a joke) etc. One day I was pulling out into traffic andthe rear-end made a POP sound. $700 later, the rearend was replaced and it has not shimmied or vibrated in the last 10,000 miles.

Seems that it had been bad for a while and finally gave. Took several teeth out of the spider gears.
