Again,I'm new to this 4x4 business,so I don't really know alot about the front end of my 1984 F-150 lol.I'm putting on new brakes and front calipers this weekend, and I'm thinking that it would be best to take the front rotors and rear brake drums and have them turned to ensure that they wear evenly with the brake pads.
Is the process of taking a front rotor off of a 4x4 the same as taking one off of a 2x4?By seeing some pics of these rotors, the process looks as if it would be completely the same.I guess what I'm asking is if the hub has to be removed or not.
to get the rotor off you need to remove the hubs by removing the hex key bolts, remove the 2 retaining clips one on the axel splines and one around the inside of the spindle. remove the phillips haed screw and slide the hub sections out. get the hub socket to remove the lock nut, washer bearing nut and bearings. the rotor shoud be free. I'd change the bearings and the seal while its apart and pack with grease to reassemble. my bearings ans seal were about $25, per wheel.
It's just a little messy. I did it with a Haynes manual, easy enough to follow. You might try picking up a set of snap ring pliers when you go get the lock nut wrench. I remember the snap-ring being a pain to get off/on with just long-nose pliers.
get some brake cleaner too. You have to packe the bearings with grease and reinstall it. i did mine in a roadside repair in the dark and had grease everywhere. Next day i had to replace my pads and scrub the rotors with cleaner. nothing abouth the job is hard just detailed.
Right on.Thanks again.I've done some bearing work in the past, but it's been awhile.I'm sure that it'll all come back to me though .But for now,it'll still raining and I can't get my brake work done today.I think I'm gonna take a few days off next week so I can get some things done around here .
i too will be changing bearings in my front end soon...how much is a lock nut wrench, roughly? the guys at napa should know what i want if i ask for it, right?
mine cost about $15 and you need to know what style you need. Mine (the axle is a 1980) is 4 tabs equidistant from one another around the socket, and i know there were at least 2 others that worked for D44's on Fords. I think one was for SA trucks and the other is for later trucks.
