needing opinions............

My 1984 4x4 Ranger's (with no 4x4) shifter is STUCK in gear! How do I get it to go back in gear? This is the second time I have replaced the shifter and it has ate up the teflon ball within 2 months time!!

stuck and needing opinions

It is an 85 Ford 4 wheel drive ranger. V-6,2.8 ,4 speed. The shifter is stuck out of gear. This new shifter will NOT go into gear. Supposedly without the reverse gear can not use the 4 wheel drive. However that was not even engaged. The two wheel system jumped completely out of gear by shifting to the reverse gear without thinking. Knowing there was no reverse gear to begin with. Do I have to pull the transmission in order to unhang the shifter?!

Am I to understand that there is no reverse, or it won't go into reverse.?

There was no reverse gear to begin with at all. Once the truck was put into reverse gear (accidentally) it was stuck! They have now gotten first and second gear back, but no others.
