I have an 02 SuperDuty F-250 SuperCab 4x4 5.4L V-8 with 3.73 gears & get a howl noise from the rear at about 60 m.p.h. in overdrive! Truck has 26000 miles took it in to dealer to have it checked & was told it is "normal" & or it is tire noise! Tires are the orig's General Grabber's 235/85 16's. I don't think it's tire noise I.M.O. I rotate the tires every 6000 miles! Sounds like gear howl to me!
Anyone else have this problem?

not to hijack the thread or change to cheby, but my mom's 'burb does the exact same thing at 50 mph, we have tried everything but a new differential. I changed the fluid and put the "Whale sperm" in and it still didn't change anything.
Mine went in my 2000 Lariot 4X4 at about 45000. My guess is that the close proximity of the muffler overheats the pinion bearing and starts to send the hole deal south. Check it out sometime. These trucks are not like the old dinasaurs that shimmied like crazy at 80 mph. We drive these SD's like cars on the highway and at higher speeds. Next time you get off the highway after 4hrs of hammerlane driving...lay your hand on that pinion bearing...ouch!! Then feel the rest of the housing. barely warm. Most are ok but some, like mine, die early. Ford knows that some die early just hope you have a good dealer. Pull your rear shaft out and drive on the front and see if its tires or your gears.
SDbully,
My truck did the same thing and it turned out that one of my front hub had gotten turned to the manual position (dang kids). This made the front end turn all the time. I have also noticed that the pinion gets really hot on the rear diff also ( thanks Garyle I feal better knowing mine's not the only one) but that's not where the noise was coming from.
