94 Ranger, 4.0, 5sp. 133,000 miles, nothing major ever done to motor except changed plugs once and changed water pump last week.
Every now and then, after I shut it off, it's hard to crank back up. It'll turn over for as long as I hold the starter, but it just won't seem to fire unless I let it sit for a while and try it again. Where to start with this?
A plug/wire change is on my list for the weekend, but what else could be contributing to this? I know it's way past due for a major tune-up, but just looking for ideas on this one.
Plugs and wires are a good start. Look at all the plugs as you take them out to see how they look. You might consider doing a compression check on all cylinders. Another possibility is a vacuum leak. Get a vacuum guage and check to see what you have. Keep us posted.
Well, last Saturday, I cranked it up and moved it in the yard. Wouldn't crank up for the rest of the day. No fire from the coil pack to the wires! Finally broke down and got a $80 coil pack from the local Advance store, put it on and it fired right up. Well, until Monday anyways. It did it again one time Monday so I took it to the Ford place. Cranked fine for them, over and over, of course! But, he advised me to replace two relays under the hood. The EEC Power Relay and the Fuel Pump Relay. Got them from Advance for $20 and so far it's been cranking and running fine. I'm hoping that's all it was.
