Old Blue I have personnely patched gas tanks, rads, with JB weld, but I have seen lots of other people patch heads and blocks, I would not recommending this for a very long time. But it will work. Just make sure you let it cure for a while before you drive again. I hope I helped ya.

D'ohh

I did the very same thing about 6 years ago to my 86 chevy and the JB weld held for 3 years with no leaking. Just make sure you degrease the area the best you can with carb cleaner.

If you have the time to pull the transfer case and do whatever dissassembly you can to get most of the parts away from the affected area, just about any competent welding shop should be able to fix the crack perminently.

If you do all the removal, teardown, buildup, and reinstall yourself, it will save you some cash (heck, a full rebuild on top of the repair will probably cost you less than buying a new one). Getting one from the bone-yard is always a gamble anyways.

I've done this type of repari several times on things like ATV engine cases and transmission tailshafts. You'd be suprised how much can be fixed...aluminum is quite forgiving.

Most of the time cracks in transfer cases come from stress fractures, so just plugging the hole with epoxy will only stop the leak, not restore the case to it's full strength, and the next time you put it under stress it will crack some more.

Anyways, something to think about....

you have a good point about the case cracking some more. I had that problem when i cracked my t-case. What I did was I put some grease on a small drill bit and drilled a hole at the top and bottom of the crack VERY SLOWLY so I didn't get any shavings in the case. I did this to keep the crack from getting any bigger. The grease held the shavings and I flushed the case out just in case. I did this with the case still in the truck and it never gave me any trouble, even in some pretty nasty 4 wheelin'.
