I posted this on the engine forum with no responses. Maybe someone here can help me.
I purchased a 302 with C4 tranny out of a 1977 Lincoln Versailles. The distributor has a red cap and an electronic pickup inside instead of conventional points. There are two wires with a connector coming from the distributor. Can anyone explain what setup I have? Do I need a ignition module (if so the old one must have stayed at the salvage yard). It appears to have a conventional coil but I must say I am somewhat lost. I was planning to install a Edelbrock non-egr Performer manifold and Holley 4 barrel carb in place of the exisiting 2 barrel one and a conventional distributor. I want to make this setup as simple as possible for installation into a 50 F-1.
The connector is round with 3 contacts. Wires coming from the distributor are red/white/black. The body of the distributor is blue and the cap is red. There is a metal tag attached at what I assume is a vacumn (I'm a newbie) fitting that reads:
60
D7DE
12127
73 14
Should I keep this distributor and does it need a control module of some type. What is the connector for and where does it go? I really appreicate your help.
Yea thats a stock Duraspark distributor. They can be fine distributors, but Im pretty sure you need a control bothats what the connector is for). I am using one with an MSD 6AL box, there is an adaptor for the msd box to the duraspark dist. If you want just plain simple dist. without a box, then I would suggest a standard points dist. with the Pertronix upgrade. Good luck
The Duraspark system is as dependable as the MSD. One of Ford's actual better ideas. The harness connects to the ignition module - you want the one with the blue plastic insert at the case. The module has 7 wires - left to right from above - 3 connect to your dizzy plug, middle 1 goes to the coil and the last 3 are open, ignition switch, and [gauges, emissions controls, throttle, etc] respectively. Wire colors are different than yours - truck plug wires are O/Y, Bk/Gn, P/Bl
I put one in an '82 'stang - replaced a 4 banger with an early 302/T5 combo and the Duraspark ignition is about foolproof. One caution - some of the aftermarket modules are junk - look for an original in a junk yard or get NAPA's lifetime model (not cheap).
