E4OD Question

What years of e4od trannys can be swapped? Mine is going out and I've been looking for one for a few weeks. One wrecking yard told me that only 93-94 can be changed on a 93, but I don't see why another one wouldn't work. Can someone give me a heads up on this, or am I stuck trying to find one that's year specific. Thanks.

Lightbulb How about C-6?

I've heard from my automatic transmission specialist that the E40D tranny is way more complicated and expensive to repair than the classic C-6, maybe you should consider getting one of those, only difference is the 4th gear and the auto overdrive...

I thought about that, but I live 250 miles from home, so the c6 mileage wouldn't really help. I just want to find a different one for a few months. Next year in school, I have transmissions, so I'll rebuild mine then (about $300 if you do it yourself) then sell the temporary one to get some cash back on it.

FYI - rebuilding a transmission is not really all that difficult, ad long as you have a good manual, a good kit, some good tools, and enough time and patience to double-check each step as you go. Be careful though, because depending on what the problem is, you might have to replace some gears or other big parts in the tranny. This isn't difficult, either... but it'll cost you more than $300. Depending on what you mean by 'Mine is going out', your tranny could need significant repair, not just a rebuild which replaces all the seals, bearings, etc.

All it needs is new clutch packs put in, but I'm not really going to have any time to let it sit as it's my only vehicle right now and I won't have any way to get to work. That's why I was going to put in another tranny, so I could have time to work on it. It's a lot faster to just do a swap then to rebuild it, and I would have to be able to do it in about a day. But anyway, back to the original question, would one out of a different year work, as far as I know 96 wouldn't because of the obdII, but I don't know what all changed as far as wiring differences between years.
