My Ranger is running like crap! It is sputtering and has NO power! I changed the plugs about 1yr. ago. I have ran out of gas a few times recently and it seems to be getting worse. Fuel pump? I changed the filter and that did not help. Every now and again it will act right for about 3 miles then back to the same crap!! What gives? By the way, it's a 93 model. Any suggestions would be appretiated..
Could be a number of things. Start with looking for codes and checking fuel pressure. BTW....the fuel in that tank helps cool the pump, not good to let it go dry.
I'm not sure I fully understand your problem; does it act like it's running out of gas while driving? Does it idle ok, but you can hardly accelerate and drive? If so, I had that problem last year. It ran fine until it warmed up, then the problem surfaced. Oddly enough, it was the IAC solenoid; considering what the IAC solenoid does, the symptoms did not even point to it.
Begin by pulling your codes, as well as looking for any vaccum leaks (loose hoses, deteriorated, etc) and any loose wiring leading to sensors. What engine/tranny do you have?
4cyl. 5 speed. It does it as soon as I crank it up. Yes it does act like it is running out of gas. It seems like the higher up in the rpm's I go the better it runs without the hesitation.
Ok, my post was concerning the 4.0L. However, I'd still pull the codes and the visual checks. Autozone pulls codes for free in anticipation of your buying parts from them; however, you're not obligated to.

I agree, it might be a flaky fuel pressure regulator. Is there any fuel in the vacuum hose for the FPR? Look in your Haynes & check fuel pressure as explained there including the test for the FPR.
First suggestion is to quit running out of gas. That can cause problems. If your problems started when you kept running out of gas, you have probably contaminated the fuel system. Try checking for vacuum leaks.
