I looked at a F250 (1988) flat bed dually 4wd with a diesel. The vin code has the letter M at the 8th place so that makes it a 7.3l.
After talking to the owner for a while he said the motor was a Detroit Diesel -- when hes says its a Detroit Diesel does that mean its not a 7.3L??
The truck ran good no smoking under any conditions (moderate acceleration no load) or hesistation. The truck was low on fuel so we drove it over to get fuel --after filling up the water in fuel light was on. ??
What is normal engine oil pressure at idle and under acceleration for this motor ? (It has an additional manual gauge).
The fella is asking $3000.00 for the truck which he claims has 116,000 miles on it. I have Fords of the same era (no diesels) the body on this truck is mint compared to what mine (road salt issues) look like --leading me to believe the 116k to be correct. $3000.00 a fair price? (Has a plow as well.)
If all goes well I'll be a Ford Diesel owner at sundown.
Is there a FORD logo or something on the 7.3l diesel block in an acessible area so that I can postively identify it. The owner says its a detroit diesel...did Ford even offer it -- I doubt on his own he went out and had this done.
should have a Navistar spec sticker on the drivers side valve cover. get some fleet gaurd test strips and check the coolant or just see if you can take it to a diesel mechanic and have them check over everything before you buy it.
You'd know if it was a Detroit because you wouldn't be able to talk over it in the cab when it's running. Also, they say Detroit on the valve covers and leak oil all over the ground.
