Another couple weeks and I'll have to start thinking about how to finish painting my '53 bodywork. I've Ospho'd and ZeroRusted all the parts and intend to use a high build primer and then primer sealer over that. All bodywork will go this far completely disassembled.
Then a color coat and maybe a clear coat, but I'm not confident that I can spray those and may farm that out. My questions:
1. How far do I take the areas that won't show? Is ZeroRust single coat enough or should I do more? I'm talking about areas like bottoms of fenders, etc.
2. Most of the parts assemble using welting. If the parts are sprayed unassembled then the welting will provide a contrasting stripe. If the parts are sprayed assembled, does the welting need any preparation other than wiping down? Is the welting supposed to be the same color as the cowling/fenders/bed, etc.?
3. I know it will be difficult to assemble the bodywork without damage if finish coated first. Is that more of a problem than masking everything?
Scott, I went through the same quandry you are in now almost exactly a year ago. I opted to have the truck painted in pieces. By that I mean the doors, hood, rear fenders, grill, running boards, tailgate and bed were all painted seperately. Phase one: the interior of the cab, under the hood, door jams, and door insides were painted. Then the painter had me reassemble the doors and the hood on the cab. Phase two was the painting of the cab exterior, bed, tailgate, rear fenders and grill. I then carefully reassembled everything. It was definately a two-man job. Good luck, John
Scott, I don't have any advise on the painting project, but I wondering how you liked the Zero Rust . Just got two qts. of it. Getting ready to paint the frame. Did you spray it ? What did you thin with ? What ratio? Do you Like how it works? Any problems with it? I know thats alot of ?s , sorry just tryin to find out.. thanks
Same dilemma I will be facing soon and it is a tough call. If I decide to paint a metallic color, I would probably lean toward painting the edges and assembling everything first, then painting it complete, only because of the ‘molting’ problem most often associated with this type paint. If I decide to paint the truck a solid color, parts painting will likely be my route since I would think it would be easier for me. As others have stated, it will be almost impossible to get everything back together and properly aligned without scratching some of the panels.
