it depends, whether or not its a 1/2 piece gasket( full/half)moon shaped seal. if it is a 2 piece you 're in luck . drop the oil pan and break loose the 3 bach crank shaft bolts you may have to go 1 more. Pul or pry out the old seal clean thouroughly and install newseal. reinstall crank bolts starting closest tro front of engine to rear . Make sure crank bolts are TOURQUED TO SPECand that main bearings did NOT MOVEAT ALL........YUKON_BLUENOSE
I just recently had my truck's rear main seal replaced (86 F250 460).
I didn't want to mess with it so I had a shop do it. The shop told me
that Ford started using one piece seals in 86, up till then it was a rope
seal.
Before I took the truck in, they told me that they would have to drop
the tranny, but they ended up having to pull the motor.
They did a great job, cleaned up the engine while it was out and replaced
a couple of broken exhaust manifold bolts and even replaced the exhaust
manifold gaskets while the engine was out.
It is the other little jobs like the exaust bolts that are broke off and the smog pump tube caps that fit in the rear of the heads. Yes could just replace the heads... which is an option. but which is better replace heads or pull engine?
I recently re-did a 351w and a 300 both of which i found 1 piece oil pan gaskets for at my local parts store. FEL PRO does not list it for 80-86 but just tell them you want one for 1993-1995 they fit great and no more leaks. They might make one for the 1995 460 worth checking into.
