I finally made the leap and bought my first diesel - '90 E-350 short (ten feet)bus. The van has about 175K, but the engine and trans have about 40K or so. It starts and runs fine. No leaks, newer exhaust and batteries. I have the maintenance records from the bus company. The glow plugs are Champion so I guess they should be replaced. With?. The controller is original or looks like it. I see alot of threads about a bypass of some sort. The pump and injectors came with the engine rebuild. I want it to be dependable. What should I do, change or fix? I can fix gas engines, but all I know about diesels is what I have read on this site. You all seem to really know your stuff. I would appreciate any help you can be . Thanks
motorcraft/beru glow plugs only. check the coolant for dca or sca with fleetgaurd strips and add coolannt addative if its under a 3.0 on the card that you get with the test strips.
trike,
I read your headline and thought, that's better then buying the farm!!
Do you know when they last changed fluids? If not, change oil, filter. Check air filter. Search here for drawings of modified glow plug system if that's what you want to do. Then just drive it for a while to get a feel of what else you may want/need to do.
