A couple weeks ago, I parked my truck on a sttep grade, and as usual I engaged the parking brake. When I went to drive it again, I let out the brake and began driving like normal. I thought the truck was driving a little weird, but just thought it was because I still wasn't used to my new truck. A few blocks down the road, I smelled that smell that makes every truck guys gut sink, I looked back and sure enough my rear tire on the passenger side was smoking like Dennis Leary. I instantly grabbed for the parking brake release, but that did nothing because I had already released it. So, I reengaged and disengaged the parking brake, and that seemed to do the trick. But now I get kind of a rubbing/grinding noise when I drive. I only notice it when I drive by something that reflects the sound, you know, other cars, medians, etc. Could there be permanent damage from the brakes being engaged, if so, how the hell am I supposed to go a good burnout with an automatic tranny?
Have you looked at the pads recently? I don't think drum pads really put the same amount of pressure on the entire pad, it's more on the top, at least it seems like that to me. Maybe when you drove it, you wore all the pad off and now the metal part of the pad is partly rubbing on the drum creating the noise? Metal on metal grinding might be pretty loud, but who knows how bad it is. Take off the drums to see, (it's pretty easy) and clean the whole thing with brake cleaner, you might find the problem when your in there.
As for the burnouts, just check the rear pads often so you don't put all weight on the fronts... they'll smoke worse than the backs.
Good Luck.
Thanks for the tip. The brakes have a lifetime warranty at Les Schwab, I just need to make sure that extends from one owner to the next. If so I will have them check them out, otherwise I will probably just check them myself. I may need bigger brakes due to the tire size. I didn't change them, but the previous owner did, and it might be a big enough difference to warrant getting bigger brakes all around. Again, thanks for the info.
