I just got the body removed from my frame, and was wondering if the distance between frame rails should be about the same at front, middle, and rear.
By the way, thanks for all the GREAT info, and Great ideas.
My Gallery is up.
Twisted 56,
That looks like a great project! Love all the glass! The shop manual shows the frame parallel all the way back. Take a look at this pic to see.
Thanks for getting back to me so quick! I think I may need to get to a frame shop before I begin my TCI front/rear suspension mods. Maybe next week if I can find a spot. All measurements on diagonals appear equal, but under the cab measures a half inch wider(34.5"). Front and Rear(34"). Anybody have a idea what this should cost?
Ced,
Has the transmission cross member been removed? I have seen a couple of frames that the cross member was hacked to make room for a different engine/tranny and the frame rails twisted out at the top due to the weight of the cab on the cab mounts. If this has happened, the cab usually ends up riding on the top of the frame because the cab mounts are bent downward.
Hey Kent, I think you may be onto something, all original crossmembers are still intact. I did go out and take a measurement of the rails from the bottom, and you got it, they measure 34" outside-to-outside front to back! Maybe I can just weld a temp. brace to the bottom while I try and pull the top back and weld a temp brace there till I get new IFS installed, and new tranny crossmember built. You sound like the person I need to have working side by side with me! I know I have at least your fatfender spirit to help guide me.
twisted56,
Glad to help. There are lots of helpful folks here with a great deal of experience on these old trucks.
The temp braces may be just the ticket if you can get the tops pulled back together. I'm not familiar with the TCI IFS package, but if the crossmember is pretty substantial, it should hold everything in place after you weld it. A beefy tranny crossmember that mounts to both the top and bottom of the frame rail would probably be beneficial also.
If you were closer, I would love to come get my hands dirty! Sounds like you've got a great project underway and we all get to watch as it comes together.
Good Luck!
