You may have to clean off a huge layer of gunk to get at the marks. Mine were REALLY hard to see, even afterwards..so I marked them up with a paint marker.
My engine was running at the time so I (yah, I know..shouldnt have) just started it and pressed a steel brush to the bottom of the harmonic.
I found TDC on the compression stroke using a dial indicator through the spark plug hole. I scribed a line at the pointer as 0°. then calculated 2° increments based on the circumference of the dampener, and scribed those on, too. Yep, it was sorta labor intensive, but I didn't want to do the right thing by buying a new dampener.
You may have marks, they just could be painted over. I had trouble finding them on a 302 a few weeks ago, I would have sworn it did not have any if I had not known better. They were painted over.
I had trouble seeing mine on my '79, so I took a piece of chalk and rubbed on the rim of the dampner, then rubbed it off with a rag. The chalk filled in the inscribed lines and was really easy to see with the timing light.
