Time for new injector pump???

Ok this is going to be long but I want to include all of the details......I have an 93 F-250 7.3 non-turbo. Last night I pulled in my drive way and had like a miss that kinda settled down after I put my foot on the accelerator. So I really didn't think much if it...first mistake. I went out about three hours later and started it up, no problem. Let it run for about 20 seconds or less. Went out this morning started it up ran fine, pulled out of the driveway and it just died....no hesitation, no miss, nothing just dead. Drained fuel filter, no water. Changed filter primed it still no start. Have fuel from inlet and outlet on filter when cranking and even fuel from injector pump inlet. Pull line from injector fuel just dripps. There are two contacts on top of injector pump...one has one wire the other has two wires I don't know what they are for but I checked them with a test light and I have power to them. Also have power to the contact off of the injector pump near the throttle assembly. Is there a solonoid on the pump that could have gone bad????if so can I test it and how. And how had is it to change the whole pump and what timing issues could I run into? Thanks...sorry so long...

Yes, you could have a solonoid problem. Not sure about the miss, but that could shut you down real fast. With the key on pull the red wire off the pump and just touch it back on the post. You should here it ticking on and off.

Have you tried loosening the lines at the injectors and cranking it with your foot on the floor? If it got a bunch of air it would take a bit to get it all out and restart.

I have done all of that and still nothing. How would air have gotten into the system if that were the case?

Did you have ALL of the injection lines loosened up at once to make sure you are getting lots of fuel flow from the injection pump? And make sure the fuel is clear, not air entraned (five dollar word). Malcolm, would the fuel still reach the injectors without pressure. I was thinking that I had a customer break a injection pump internally and that is what it did, just trickle fuel thru the pressure lines.

?????

hello, my name is tom, i work in a diesel injection shop and this sounds like a fun one to figure out, so the miss well minor at this point, it doesn't pump at all?? yes it could be the solenoid, but i would look elsewhere, do you have fuel all the way to the pump?? what about the return hose, can you blow air through it back to the tank, sometimes this being clogged can cuase to much backpressure and cuase the pump not to function, you have fuel to the injectors?? if you maybe siezed the i.p. it would pump at all not very common but happens, there could be other internal issues like the metering valve could be hung up in the shut off position, but ya do what the others tell you to also crack the lines and see iff you have fuel, let me know what happens

You jogged my memory there Bill, I had a pump with a broken shaft not too long ago too. We had fuel everywhere but the injectors. Funny thing was it was a pump we had recently replaced.

I had one go the same way but it kinda gave us some warning, truck would run fine then develop a miss, or it would be fine, shut it off and you would have to pull it to get the pump to put enough pressure to work, the fuel would just trickle out of the injector lines, pull the truck and drop the clutch in 3rd and away it would go. the only thing was that when it went the truck developed a bad shudder and a miss then it just died, return line partially plugged is what caused it. Complete self destruct of the pumps internals.

Ok, so it sound as if I need a new ip. I have a good friend at the ford garage that gave me a price of 284.80 for the pump and around 250 to install. This doesn't seem to bad but I have never had it done before so what's you opion.

One more thing..... this didn't seem to be relevent before but who knows. About a week or so before this happened my truck would start to kinda miss and blow white smoke out the exaust at around 2700-2900 RPM. It would normally do this at 3500 RPM when I reach the governer level. Could this have been a sign that this was going to happen????
