Air conditioning problem
Have a 2001 SD V10 that I bought used last year, but just got around to addressing this problem.
Verified Situation: truck already hot from running, but air has not been turned on. Decide to turn on air(max or outside setting). Air coming from vents very warm(as if heat is turned on). Fiddle with settings(air-on/off), different fan speed, temp. dial turned to hot, then back to cold- air still warm. May continue like this for many minutes(up to 5-10), then all of a sudden cool air starts to come out the vents.
I have stopped the truck to verify the compressor is running-it is, but not continuously at this point(which I think it would be seeing the temp inside the truck is very warm)-it has a constant cycle of maybe 5-8secs. on, then 5-8 secs. off.
Once the air starts, it seems to be OK as long as I do not turn off the ignition. If I stop(say for gas), then restart the engine again, it may work right away, or do the same thing again, even while just idling.
Any help would be appreciated. Don't want to take it to the dealer unless I have to. Do most work myself if I can.
Thanks in advance.
Other possibilities:
(1) Low on refrigerant
(2) Thermostat is bad
(3) Damper is hanging (unlikely)
NOTE: There is a forum for this. May do a search there also.
Is this thermostat strickly for the air conditioner?
Should the high pressure side of the compressor(when running) be real cold?
