I lifted my 99 f-250 SD and put 35" tires on it. I keep hearing about the computers need to be reflashed for tire increase. What does this intel and would this be the same as getting a chip that changes the speedo set up for tire changes. If I need to get it done at the dealer what do I need to tell them?
It is not a reflash or the same as a chip. All you are doing is changing the mathmatical formula that displays the speed. If you tell the service tech to enter a value of 601 you should be dead on with 35" tires.
I have had this done, it should cost you a half an hour in labor($35+) any more and go find a different dealer. There is a step-bystep procedure on a different site if you need to bring it in to them.
Tell them you need to have the speedo set for you tire size. Use the 601 value instead of the stock setting.
Your speedo will be off when you drive without reseting the value.
So will the ABS system among other systems. 35" tires are what, 12-15% larger, that's a big difference. Go to another Ford dealer like Heavyassault suggested, it needs to be done.
Only the dealer has access to change that setting. Your brakes will kinda feel like you can't come to a stop. I think it will change ABS controlling the porportion (sp?) valve.
What will the ABS problem be, and if I buy a tuner will that be able to change it?
Todays engine are technological wonders, but especially in the area of electronics and what they control. 15% bigger tire diameter can affect alot of those systems since the engineers write all that software for a specific sized tire. I think that the speedo-mod helps to correct most of the software changes, but like HeavyAssault says, the ABS may have to be set by the dealer. Remember if you have for example 4.00 gears with 30" tires, and switch to a 20% taller tire, or 36" tires, your gear ratio is now 20% less, or down to a 3.20. According to your ECU though nothing has been changed by you changing wheel diameter unless you adapt your speedo to let it know.
I know some of you may not agree with this, but I'm going to add my 2 cents worth here. I have had three Superduties since 1999. I have run 35" tires on all three of them and have yet to get my speedo reprogrammed. The Speedo is off by exactly 10% from the stock configuration, so it makes it easy to know how fast you are going. 55 mph onthe speedo is really 60mph now. I have had no adverse affects with ABS or anything else. In fact, I gain 10% more warranty by not reprogramming the speedo.
I guess the point I am trying to make is that if you need your speedo accurate, then reprogram it. Otherwise, you do not NEED to do it. The ABS, etc will be fine.
