Front diff noise - Dana 44
I am replacing the drivers front wheel bearing on my '74 F250 4x4 w/Dana 44. When I turn the wheel assembly I hear a bad grinding/clunking noise(hard to explain noises but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't sound like this) coming from the differential. I just bought the truck this month and between the headers and fist-sized hole in one muffler, I didn't hear the noise. This wheel bearing I'm replacing is EXTREMELY bad so I'm in it this far, should I go for rebuilding diff or is a new 44 the better route. Thanx in advance.

change both sets of wheel bearings ,axles r out anyway check splines for damage if damaged pull diff cover and checkfor other damage if none ur good to go..... i own '79 f250 dana 44 front /rear,390 t18 tranny and np205 transferw/t18 tranny.................... yukonbluenose

If it's making bad noise, pulling the diff cover will reveal the issue. Not a bad idea to do anyway to change the fluids. That's the FIRST thing I do when I get a new (to me) old vehicle. Grinding noises are usually caused by burnt bearings, and the clunk could be the carrier floating around on the worn bearing.
