Header .....Bolts ...vs...Studs

.......................Do Studs hold ....Better....than Bolts????...I have bolts currently on my 77 hiboy , but they won't stay tight ??? Also, what is the proper torque for a 400 for either bolts or studs???? , thanks, s.kuteman

I would think the studs would hold better but not much.

If there is room for you to get a socket or enough room to get a wrench on the nut and tighten it, then go for it. I have had great results using the bolts with recessed hex heads, you can use an allen wrech or a socket with an allen wrench on the end and it works great. Might call the header manufacturer or gasket manufacturer and see what they recommend for the tq specs. You could also use the stage 8 header bolt kit, I have been told they work well, but they aren't cheap. Good luck

............jwt , thanks for the help. I really hadn't thought about the clearance problem but it becomes obvious as you think about it for a while. I'll call Sanderson today or Tamale(tomorrow). Somebody else mentioned stage 8 fastners so I'll check into them. Again, thanks for your help , s.kuteman

I would just use some good lock washers and loc-tite on the header bolts, I used the stage 8 locking bolts and they were a major pain in the butt to install and uninstall. Also the shape of the clip limited full torque on some of the bolts.

You want the star type lock washers, not the split type.

The studs are a major advantage when installing long tube headers. No more hassles getting the holes to line up.

However, the nuts for the studs have a larger diameter than typical header bolts. You may not be able to use them with some headers. I have 4 studs and 4 bolts on my passenger side header (dynomax) because there wasn't any clearance for the nuts to go on. But that was enough to solve the alignment hassles.

I'm still working on the exhaust, so I can't say anything about holding ability.

I used stainless studs and I haven't had any trouble yet. Of course I only have about 3000 miles on my headers, though!!!
