I am working on a 1996 F250 PSD. The Glow plugs stopped working. I found the Control module was bad, so I replaced it. After replaceing it, I noticed the plugs now had power, but the control module stays on even after the motor is started. I thought the module would turn off after 30 seconds or so, but it don't. Does this turn off or am I missing something?
I've seen that on the earlier (94 type glow plugs) buit I wasn't sure about the 96. Also, I measured the resistance of each plug and I read 1 ohm, I was told it should be between 1 and 5. So I guess that they are fine then. Does anyone know it that is right?
The glow plugs could be burnt out and still be grounded. The best way to check them is have an assistant turn the key while you hold an ammeter across the battery cable. Each glow plug draws about 40 amps so the first time the controller cycles it should read about 320 amps, give or take 20 amps.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Mar-02 AT 11:46 AM (EST)]Joe: Thanks, as usual, for a great tip. I've been trying to get the amperage rating for 8 working glow plugs for months; the dealers are clueless, none of the tech manuals have it, and not even the local Navistar guy knew. What a forum this is!
They will only draw that amperage the first time they cycle on. As they get warmed up the amperage draw goes down. But the first time they cycle on from cold (room temprature or less) you should see full amperage.
