If you do the timing chain yourself, all you will need is a harmonic balancer puller, which autozone will loan you for free if you don't feel like buying it. Replace the front seal while you are at it as well - it should be included in a gasket kit for timing chain replacement (got mine at NAPA). Definitely check the play before you dive into replacing the thing.
I don't have an auto zone close so i'll just buy the tool its only 12 bucks,, but i'll also need a gear puller for the crank gear as well correct? and how does the gear go back on? I know how it works with gm but is ford the same with a key ?
You shouldn't need a puller for the timing gears. Just turn the engine until it gets to tdc - there will be two marks on the timing gears - they will line up if it is in the correct position. The mark will be at the 6 o'clock position on the top (cam) gear, and the 12 o'clock position on the crank gear. Both the gears are only able to go on one way - the crank has a keyway, and I want to say the cam has a pin or something in it, but I can't remember for sure. When you get a new chain, get a new timing set - gears and chain. The stock gears are a nylon type material which wears down, and the new chain will still have some play due to the old gears. The set was about 20 bucks at NAPA when I did my timing chain. Be sure to ask for a gasket kit too - they will have one with all the gaskets you need to put the timing cover back on, as well as all the waterpump gaskets.
Yeah thats how gm is I just havn't done much ford stuff like that . I have an engine to swap out in a geo as soon as i get that done i'll get on the truck. I might put a call into comp cams and look for a SD friendly version hehe I already have it apart might as well look into it.
Ok latest update hehe yet another!! checked the timing chain with a breaker bar and its good so I adjusted the timing almost 2 in from where it was on the balancer. I'm about 1/2" above the little round cut out area. It worked trucks very drivable. It still has a little miss or something going on. When I sit in traffic with my foot on the brake and in drive it has a little shudder like it wants to go foward. Its not constant but consistant if you know what I mean every 1 or 2 sec it does it. But the major hurdle is overcome I can acually drive my truck !!!!!!
