I found a 2001 Diesel (7.3) LTD 4x4 for $17k. It has 128,000 miles on it, which I think is incredibly high for 3 (almost 4) years. It would become really only used for extreme weather and for weekend trips since I commute in a gas friendly civic hatchback.
I'm curious as to whether or not thats too many miles and I'm going to start running into problems right away. I've heard of these engines lasting from 300-750k depending on maintenance--something I keep up on with my Mustang, so this would fall right in line. But, as I've said, I'm not going to be pouring miles on this thing since I've got a commuter, so the high miles themselves don't bother me, I just worry about it falling to pieces in rapid fashion.
I plan on checking it out after work this afternoon unless all I get are warnings.
I would have it looked at by a good diesel mechanic and if it passes the inspection and you feel the maint was done regularly on it that seems like a great price. I would run a carfax to look for accidents, floods, buybacks, ect. Taken care of that engine has MANY miles left in it. Drive the Excursion a few times and the Civic will sit at home.... We have a Civic for our son to use around town and I drove it a couple of times to work on the freeway, no thank you..... I will pay the extra $2.80 in fuel each day to drive the Excursion. Way too many NASCAR wanna bees on the freeway back here for my comfort level. I want as much metal around me as possible.
Good luck with your decision.

That is a really cheap Excursion! Do a carfax and Oasis report to see what kind of history it's had (owners, fender benders, and warranty work).
128K is nothing for a 2001 7.3, I'd be more conserned with the tranny that anything else. 300-400K is the norm for a well taken care of powerstroke, 750K is pushing it for even a well oiled machine.
And yes, you will not like the Civic anymore if you buy the X.
Yeah ... that diesel should be just about broken in by now. And don't overlook the fact that in order to acquire so many miles in such a short time period, a major portion of them must've been highway miles.
In two years I've put 64K on my X. 130 Miles each day to haul my butt to work. On week-ends in the summer its towing the TT around. Not much rest for my X unless I'm travelling on business, which in the past 2 years has been minimal. Don't sweat the miles, I saw a 200 350 7.3 for sale with get this 577K, pictures of the odometer and a car fax reprot to boot. 577K, not bad for an american vehicle eh!
I put over 50K miles on the F250 last year, and since 8/15/01 I've put 114K miles on it, and it was rarely driven for the first few months of ownership.
I recall a 2001 Powerstroke on ford-trucks with 507K miles and it had been through one auto tranny and nothing mechanicly. That is some miles but not as many miles as the truck that I've got a picture of the speedometer. It's a 99 or newer Super Duty and the speedo reads 907K!!! and yes it says diesel fuel only! The picture was also found on ford-trucks but don't know anything about the history of the miles.
Seen some Cummins run up to 1 million with no major overhauls.

I'm with you...it is just getting warmed up…great buy.
