By adding a chip or microtuner we're essentially reprogramming the on board computer. Since there is such an improvement (50hp 110ft/lb torque) you'd think Ford would program them that way from the factory. Why don't they??? I can understand the 80hp increase because of the increase in exhaust system size that's required but hey if Ford could boast 300hp and 615ft/lb of torque vs. 250hp and 505ft/lb of torque by simply reprogramming why wouldn't they??

Warranty costs, I suppose. This horse power thing is a "feel good" thing. They want just enough horse power to convince the customer to buy the vehicle (over what ever the competition is advertising) but no more than what is necessary to do that. If the exhaust emmision label says it has 275 HP, how do you know, unless you've had it on a floor dyno, what your actual HP is? And what difference would it make anyway as long as you have enough power to get the job done or more importantly, as long as you don't have another truck to compare it to? (Just my opinion.)

Joe's got a point. Warranty issue may arise more frequently with an engine in a higher state of tune.

I would add that engine longevity could be a concern but more importantly the present transmissions can't really take much more. Although I say that knowing of 500+HP PSD's with stock transmissions running out there.

monsta,

Hey buddy, ol' pal, I'm real interested in that "500+HP PSD's"
thing that you said. Do you think you could hook me up with some information on that diesel fuel fricassee?

Can I find it on a search here?...Or is it on that testosterone-driven site? I don't want to go back to that place.

I'm real curious to know how it's done. What mods, how much $$$ spent to get that output, etc. If I were to guess, I'd say it's 90% fuel mapping, and 10% exhaust and intake. I'm a nut about that stuff so I was just curious.

Now. In regard to the topic of discussion;

IMO,I think the PSD has enough power to do whatever I need it to do...right out of the box. I'm only considering a chip (or that new Diablo programmer) so that I can get a little better mileage. NOT that I am complaining, It's just that the price of fuel is rising again.:-X23

Read this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/excursion/136.html

I'm still looking for the most recent dyno run he did. It has some different set-ups mentioned. I would say that 400+ is more prevelant than 500+, crank HP, that is....I really probably shoulda said 400-500+ HP. He didn't do much to his stock tranny other than firm up line pressure. There is much more info, I just gotta find it.
