i am building a motor for my vw buggy and decided on a 302. Does anyone know the weight of a 302? also a friend of mine said that if go with the 302 (1989) i can put some 351 winsor heads on it to get more power. What is envovled in this or would it be worth it to put some gt-40 heads on it. I am looking to shoot around 300hp. Cam, hardley any exhaust about 3 feet, 750 edelbrock carb. what about the intake will i have to use one for a 351 or the 302. any information or insite on what to do what would be great. sorry for the noob questions
You'll need a 302 intake, 351's wont fit. The 302 is around 450-500lbs, depends on the heads you use. If you use cast iron they're about 50lbs heavier than aluminum. It's a pretty light motor because Ford wanted it light for the mustang. The 351 is considerably heavier because the block itself is much more beefy. Ford took all the weight they could out of a 302 w/o loosing much strength.
thanks for the weight. I think it will be just right. another thing if use the gt-40 heads on a 89 block what will i have to do to make these work? What cars/trucks can you get the gt-40 heads out of? once again thanks for any info.
Some mid 90's mustangs (gt's I believe), 96 and earlier explorer/mountaineer equiped with 5.0's, first gen lightnings. They would all bolt down no problems on a 302, except the ones on a lightning, they were put on 5.8 motors that use a larger head bolt, you can get stepped studs or washers to install them on the 5.0 no problem, otherwise they are the same heads. These heads can be hard to find, expect to pay $300 for an original set with 80,000+/- miles on them.
If you use the gt-40p's they came out on 97 up explorer mountaineers with a 5.0, they will bolt right down to your 5.0, there is a plug angle issue and ford motorsport headers or headers that will clear the spark plugs are required so keep that in mind if you get a set, other header will work in some cases but its a hit and miss, some will work but you have to take them off to change the plugs. Tri-state cylinder heads offers these brand new casting with larger than stock 1.94/1.60 valves 5 angle vavle job and new springs complete for $520-540, good luck
thanks i found a set of the gt-40p's out of a totaled explorer for 100 bucks. it had 97,000 miles on the od (should i rebuild). i am going to build an exhaust that goes up and towards the front of the engine (mounted backwards in vw) so no plug problems at least i dont think? will i get a substancial amout of power out of gt-40p's or should i just save my 100 bucks and get some of the Tri-state cylinder heads? i have about 1,200 to spend on the whole motor and i would like for my hp to be close to 300. free motor. so i am doing pretty good so far. once again thanks.
Well I would say you found a pretty good deal, the cheapest "p" heads I found were $250 with about 75000 miles.
Bone stock gt-40p's will be able to support 300hp, shouldn't be too much to have them resurfaced, new seals and springs, etc. Ask around and see what kinda prices the local machine or speed shops usually charge for different jobs. Might have someone trust worthy look them over and give you and idea of what is needed, who knows you may get away with little to no work needed.
I am suprised you found a set to be honest,, later
