Air Pump Misfortune...

So after a bad day of rain my air pump has developed a squeal that can be heard a mile away. I originally thought that it was the belt, but after taking it off and inspecting the pullies I noticed that the oil pump squeaks slightly when rotating it by hand - running the engine amplifies this 10 fold. I tried to spay a little WD40 on the shaft but this only helps temporarily.
I have to take a trip in a week and am a little worried that this might cause worse problems if left alone.
Has anyone experianced this problem - any suggestions for how a driveway mechanic could fix it up? Do I have to resort to taking the air pump off and cleaning it?

Thanks in advance!

To me, an oil pump is one of those things you just don't mess around with. If your sure its the pump, I would take it out and change it. If you pray it with WD-40, and the squeel stops, that tells me its not oiling itself. If it can't oil itself, how can it oil your engine?

How can something submerged in oil it's entire life start squealing and then stop when sprayed with WD-40?

As in remove the air pump?

Is there a moderator that can help me change the main topic away from oil pump - to air pump, so not to confuse people searching the forum for oil pump posts.

Sorry for the confusion all.

You're gonna have to replace it. They're not designed to be lubed at all, so once they start making noise, they're toast.
You can get a reman one, but you might need the OE# off the old one.

Ah nuts.. I went into a shop today to ask what kind of lube to use and they told me pretty much the same thing. That the unit is sealed and once it goes, it goes. The only thing now - is that it has stopped making noise. I don't know if it is because it dried up (it origanlly started to make noise when we had a big rain) - or the WD40 I was spraying onto the shaft finally got to where it needed to be. Anyway buying a new one is not one of my first options because the guys I went to wanted close to 300 bucks just for the part.
Thanks for the responce!

I used to sell parts for a big chain, and I don't remember them costing much more than $75 (exchange) for a reman.

Those air pumps are very sensitive to moisture for some reason. Make sure you check the filter, it's a large canister on the passenger side fender.

If the pump is making noise every once and a while - is it junked - or might there be a way to oil / grease it and replace the filter and not have to buy a new one? Some one has told me that it can't be taken apart - I was thinking of taking the pully wheel off and WD40'ing the axle directly, am I just beating a dead cat?

This is great info thanks guys!

There’s not really anything you can do for the old one. Just get a rebuilt one from AutoZone, there only like $50.

I'm sure glad that nobody said take it off or cut the belt - this has to be a first!

On a vehicle with cats (like your's) the air pump is not optional. The cats will clog and overheat without it.

Smog pumps are actually not that simple. I once had a customer bring in a core that was in pieces and I was amazed at how many moving parts were in there. I always thought they were a simple vane design, but they're more like a gear pump, but elliptical. Kinda reminded me of a rotary engine.

Scroob - I actually thought someone was going to say that too. I didn't want to ask outright because I thought it was almost too simple!
1pump - Sounds like you have the insight! I think I'll try to get a rebuilt, have my eye on an 87 - 93 mustang pump that I'm hopping will fit. When I get the old one off I'll strip it and post some pics!

Thanks again guys!
