I have a 97 Expedition Eddie Bauer with Mach stereo. The rear subwoofer had decided to go south and I thought I would replace it with an aftermarket one. I haven't actually torn it apart yet, but I will be tomorrow morning. I went by the local high powered stereo people and they said using the factory amp, I need to make sure that I match the ohms rating on the new speaker with the one it came with from the factory and that it still might not sound all that good. I keep getting outbid on ebay for the good factory units and would l really like to get it fixed this week. Does anyone have experience with aftermarket replacement and does any know what the ohms rating is for the factory speaker?
For anyone planning on replacing the subwoofer for Mach in their expedition, plan on it taking a while. I had to take apart the whole right side from rear seat belt, door jam trim and weatherstrip to the rear door upper and lower jam trim. The box also has to come out to get a bolt in the back of the box that screws into the magnet of the speaker, but that's just 3 screws. The local stereo store told me that they had 8 inch subs in stock just needed to know if it was 2 or 4 ohms, so I took it all apart and took it with me. Wound up that they didn't acutally have any and would have to order it. I ran all over town and just about gave up on finding one. But as luck would have it, Wal-mart carries a Roadmaster brand for $20. I reluctantly bought it thinking if it didn't work well, I can always take it back. Well, It took a little work to get it all in. I don't ever cut wires so I had to solder some short wires that plug into factory harness and fit the "push" conectors of the speakers. I got it installed and it suprisingly sounds good. I was a little concerned when I plugged it in outside the box and cranked it up and it didn't make much bass. But after I slid it in the box, it made a huge difference. It all back together now and I am happy with it.
