I have a 99 F-150 XL 4.2L 4x4 with a 5 speed. I've been asked to haul a friends horse to a new barn, and I'm wondering if you think the 4.2 is capable of this. I don't think my truck has a towing package, and I'm not sure what gears are in the pumpkins. I'm not the original owner, but I know the last owner had to add the class IV receiver to the truck, it wasn't original.
It would only be one horse in a two-horse trailer, so probably in the neighbourhood of ~3,500 lbs (might be less, but I'm going worst case here). Total distance will be about 50 miles.
I'm thinking it should be alright, what do you guy's think?
hey Rob, i pulled a trailer with a TL1000R, 480+lbs a YZF600R 400+lbs, a white oak entertainment center that weighed about 500lbs, a 20gal air compressor about 100lbs, 2 welders 1 mig 1 stick weighing about 300lbs total, 2 argon bottles about 80-90lbs each, a Mac tool box full of tools about 250lbs, a smallblock chevy V-8 about 200lbs, a Fridge about 200lbs, then the trailer itself weighed about 800lbs then in the back of the truck i had about 15 boxes of clothes and R/C cars, books, comics etc...they had to be at least 600lbs total...thats 3410lbs on the trailer and about another 600 in the back=4010lbs and it went from Lake Mary Fl to Brandon which is exit 109A to exit 8=101 miles to I-75 S to brandon which is about another 12 miles, i made that trip and 2 more like it to help my buddy move with no problems ....oh yea on the bumper hitch at that....i now have a true hitch but didnt at that time and the trip went smooth sailing....you should be just fine and if you look at my truck you will see its on 20's 5 speed with the V-6 4x2 so you should be just fine....in my opinion
James is right, but rude from time to time. LOL!!!
Welcome to FTE Rob.
I have a chassis mounted hitch. Two years ago I pulled a U-Haul car transport (1,000lbs) with a 1978 Corvette loaded on it (4,200lbs), and in the bed I had a pool table (300lbs), Clothes, Bar Stools, and a small air compressor (75lbs) in my 2001 4.2L 5spd. I do have the Sport Package and the 5600lb GVWR Package which beef up my suspension a bit as well as a stock 3:73 Rear End (I got lucky) but I had no problems. I didn't have a lot of power at the green light but the 300 miles I drove with the estimated 5,500lbs on my back went well. I didn't even feel any difference in clutch performance during or after the trip.
Please keep in mind that I do not suggest this type of abuse. It was only out of necessity that I subjected my poor little mule to that type of torment.
