I have a 1994 f-150 4x4 I recntly went camping towing our tent trailer. after arriving at our campsite we noticed that the truck started shifting quite hard into 2nd mainly but also into drive . almost shakes you out of your seat.I have not been using overdrive while towing. I have been reading about ford having problems with the mlp sensor causing problems. Is this where I start?? help please. tranny oil does not look or smell burnt.
Mine does the same thing. Took it to a transmision shop. They read the stored codes. It was not the sensor. It is the torque converter slipping ( code 684, I think) The slaming into gear is the computer going into failure mode, to actually protect the transmision. I am told five slips of the clutch triggers the protect mode, and issues the code. I am looking at a new heavy duty torque converter. It is possible that it is the sensor, the OBD1 code will tell you.
I understand what you are saying just that in my opinion somthing that sounds that bad can't be good. I have an appointment at ford on thurs for some diagnostics I'll let you know how i make out. thanks again. besides at a buck a litre its better off in the driveway lol
Does your tranny have torque shudder? Torque shudder is when the truck kind of vibrates or rumbles like it is going over grooved pavement. This happens at about 50mph under very light acceleration. It goes away if you stop accelerating or under hard acceleration because the torque converter lockup clutch unlocks under those conditions.
The hard shifting can be a symptom of particles in the oil, or like the other guy said, the tranny is boosting pressure to protect itself. Either way, if you have torque shudder along with the hard shifting, things are going down hill. Pre 95 E4OD trannies had this problem and it was mostly due to a weak torque converter.
If it is shudder, eventually there will be damage requiring a rebuild. Better to get it taken care of sooner rather than later.
apparantly clutch fan is hooped. and is not cooling the tranny enough this is sending the tranny into the protect mode . once I replace the clutch fan this should take care of the problem.this makes me wonder if I should also consider putting in an extra tranny cooler.
