Gentlemen, It has been some time in coming but I now have the means to upgrade my 2k PSD with exhaust, A-pillar gauge array and performance chip. In reading posts on this and other forums I need some guidance on the down pipe (ID/OD) selection. Some users praise the 3" to 4” down pipe and others the 3" to 3.5” setup. What are the benefits of the 4" over the 3.5”? I have read that the 4” will drop your low-end torque, is this so? I have an automatic transmission and don’t want to loose the low-end benefits when pulling. I want to purchase the right products the first time. Any help and guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Thx, Jeff
I have not upgraded my exhaust but these trucks come with 3" into 3 1/2". I've heard that the best results come from 3 1/2" into 4". My neighbor tried 4" all the way and lost the low end then went back to the 3 1/2" into 4" configuration.
I don't believe it would hurt anything on the low end side of the power by going to a 4 incher........the turbo and the manifold supplies all the backpressure the engine needs.
IMO a 4" dp without a chip will loose power
been there done that.
with a 80 hp sc I still have the 3" dp to a 4" exhaust without a muffler.
my chip is custom programmed adn I do not have any trouble with egts as of yet when towing.
if I add more power then I may go to a 3.5 dp but not likely.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Mar-02 AT 05:38 PM (EST)] I have an '00 PSD with the K&N airfilter, no catilyst, stock downpipe to the Pro-Flow muffler which has 4" in and 4" out to a high volume "Y" pipe that is 4" to the left and right 5"x12" chrome slant cut tips. This Baby has a deep mellow tone and a load open loop turbo roar when she is warming up. I wanted a louder sound but I could not find a muffler that would stand up to the volme/pressures of a 7.3. Fanasy Muffler in Midwest City, Oklahoma off of N.E.23rd St. did my work. Don't let'um tell ya ya can't put duals on a diesel. By the way, my truck came factory without a catalytic converter and large fuel filler neck, no restricker at the filler cap. Cool hu?
