92 Explorer irratating clunking noise

I get this clunk sometimes when letting off on the gas...it seems to be coming from the rear end or mybe the tranny or driveshaft. I have checked the u-joints by trying to move them...they seem tight, but could they be gone? I have noticed play in the rear diff, when I pulled the cover and replaced new oil to synthetic. If you grab the drive shaft with the wheels off the ground and turn it in one direction then quickly back the other way...there seems to be quite a bit of play in the meshing of the rear end gears. This problem seems alot more evident when going off the throttle then on the throttle. Its not coming from the radius rod bushings...could it also come from the tranny itself? How can I locate this to fix the problem or does anyone have any ideas what I could look for or check? Thanks alot guys!

Rangers have this problem with the drive shaft clunk. I had my drive shaft replaced with an aluminum shaft and it fixed it. Not sure if the explorers have this problem.

My Bronco II had a clunk noise when I would let off the gas, later found that the transmission was going bad. As the A4LD gets age and mileage, they will go bad an eventually need to be replaced.
