Transmission Questions

I have a 1982 F350 with a 400 and a C6. This thing is really a slug. I could not care less about acceleration, but I need to be able to pull a decent (very heavy) trailer. I have all the linkage parts of an 87 diesel, and can get a t19 off an 83 diesel cheap.

Here are my questions:

1. Will my bell housing work off the C6?
2. Are the ratios different between the gas & diesel?
3. Does the t18 or the NP 435 have a better granny gear?
4. Do these use a hydraulic or manual linkage?

I just really need to have more first gear, and i already have 3.73 gears, but may switch to 4.56. I never go over 55, and work the hell out of this sometimes...

Thanks for the help. Feel free to email me, especially if you have something like this for sale or would sell.

Mike

The C6 ratios are diifferent with the gas and diesel, so I am told. I imagine the gas C6 has a lower first and second gear. I'm not sure if the bellhousing patterns are the same for 400 and 6.9 diesel, but I don't think they are. The NP435 has a slightly lower gear than the T18 (6.69 for the NP), but the T18's gear is still plenty low. You also mentioned T19, which may have different gearing. I think they used these in Jeeps, not sure. If you are not into driving fast, an axle gear change from 3.73 to 4.56 will make a noticeable improvement in pulling power. I changed from 3.55 to 4.56 with 33" tires and noticed a big difference. I don't have overdrive either, so I just drive slow. I would imagine a set of Cleveland 2 barrel heads and a manifold, carb and cam would wake up that 400...
