Does anyone know of a good website that gives good ideas on shop layout? I've moved into a new house with a two car detached but it's empty and I'm lost on where to put everything.
dixon18: Just for curiousity I did a search for "garage layout" and it kicked back almost 200 hits. One of our members here does that for a living, just cant remember his code name. Try that search and I am sure you will find something.
The best advise I can give you is to put castor wheels on everything that you can. You can bunch stuff up for a large project. It also makes it easier to change the layout. I have my lathe and mill on wheels. I use jackscrews to level them.
Layout is very important with limited space. I am finishing up on the redo of my 2-car garage. I added a closet, lots of shelves, a new workbench, stainless sink with hot/cold water. I still have to pipe in my compressor, add a 230v breaker for a welder and paint. I will post pics when I finish.

I am certain a book can give you good ideas, but I would think your intended use of the garage would determine the layout. For example I have a 3 bay garage. For flexibility I used three roll-up garage doors, but I need a shop. So one bay is my shop area. I have all the benches and tools/welders and most of the electrical in that area. The lift took up the center bay, and the other bay is my flexible space.

I checked out the book at the online store, it looks like that's the one I might need. However when I went to check it out, it was going to cost me 60.03US to get it. I'd love to support Motorhaven but when the shipping is going to be twice what the book is worth, I don't think so. I also ran into this when I inquired about a shop manual for my truck. Sorry, I try and find it elsewhere.
We told you the last time you mentioned this that you can call our toll-free number because our system doesn't calculate all Canadian shipping correctly. Why post this instead of calling as we noted last time?
Sorry guys I don't remember being told this. I honestly didn't know that the you couldn't calculate Canadian shipping. Once again, sorry I will call the store. Thanks.
