Hey, i got a 89 Probe that i put a new 5spd, clutch, brakes, and tires on and then the motor goes.. great luck i have. It has a 2.2L in it. I was reading that they came with 3.0 V6s in them also.. i was wondering if the V6s would bolt to the 4 banger tranny.. Anybody know?? I knew i should of sold this car before it became a problem.
Had an 89 probe gt turbo - it was a mitsubishi motor IIRC...
and QUICK :-)
bought it used after my wife and I took it for a test drive...
when I gave it some juice in 2nd gear and it boosted the tires loose...
my wife said - "Oh no, I can tell we're buying this one !!!!"
The Probe uses a Mazda motor, the trannys bolt up, but nothing else does. The swap has been done by one or two folks at www.probetalk.com, but it basically involves cutting the front end off a donor car and welding the entire mess together. Probably not worth the effort. The 2.5 V-6 didn't show up until after '89 anyway. Something like '92. The 2.2 is pretty stout, just remember it has mechanical lifters that need adjusted every 15,000 or you'll burn a valve.
BTW, I'm a new F-150 owner, but I've been racing Mazda products for about 20 years now - started with a 84 626 Sport Coupe. I hate to count how much time and money I've dropped into this aweful addiction. Somebody help me . . .
I have to admit them mazada motors are pretty good.. Mine had 230k on it and ran damn good then just one day something happend, started steaming really bad, changed the head gasket, didnt help, changed the head, and intake.. still gutless and steams so i think my block is cracked. Im gonna just change the motor since i got so much money in the car now. Dont mazada MX6's have 2.2L in them too??
Check on ebay. There are tons of 2.0L 4 bangers but hardly any 2.2Ls on there. I found a 88 Mazada MX6 GT that has a turbo and everything on it. its a 2.2L looks ecaxly like my motor.. wonder how hard that turbo is to hook up.
626, MX-6, or Ford Probe from 84 to 97 all shared that same block for the 4-bangers. 97 and later are OBD-II, PITA to change into earlier car, but they do fit. The block is the same in the B2000 truck, but the head and intake are totally different because of the rear-wheel drive. Even the old GLC and 323's had a smaller version with the same block, but why would you want to go smaller?
The turbos bolt on really easy, if you keep the boost down on a solid motor you don't even have to open up the motor. Grab a ECM from a turbo car, replace the injectors with a set from a turbo, and meet your new live-in friend, his name is torque steer.
Well im changeing the whole motor. and the motor im going to put it in it is out of a MX6 that has a turbo on it. Will the ECM's just interchange? no differnt wiring harnesses? My uncle has a 86 626 but it has a 2.0 and my 89 probe has a 2.2L ive never seen a 626 with a 2.2 in it.
