This is my second truck I did have a 1998 F-150 with a 4.6L v8 and that of course had plenty oh plenty of power. Well now I have a 2001 Ranger with a 2.3L engine and a 5 speed transmission. I'm not exactly a mechanic but I do know quite a bit about mechanics, just curious about this 2.3L engine and what would be some good modifications to increase my horsepower. I know I could add a turbocharger but..I don't mean that kinda horsepower. Just thought maybe yall new some less expensive things and maybe have tried and could tell me the truth about what works. I hate seeing those advertisements where everythings adds 20hp...when it doesn't. Ok well I'll be very appreciative of any info I can get.
Instant 20HP would come from an exhaust system and a Diablo chip. Insulating your intake can help give you a few extra ponies. As far as adding a K&N, it can help give you some power, but it can add to a few problems as far it's letting a few extra particles by that a paper filter wouldn't. That is mainly left open to opinion though.
I went with a Flowmaster 40 series with a 2.5" cat-back. Sounds pretty throaty coupled with my K&N conical. Look at my signature and check out my gallery to see what else I did/how it looks if you're interested.
As I have stressed to other users, please don't just blindly do what I did. I'm just a guy who ended up with a pretty nice truck by trying some different combinations of modifications. What I did may not work for you. On the other hand it could work better. I guess I'm just trying to make a disclaimer so you're not ticked off at me if things don't turn out how you expected them to, and so I don't feel guilty for giving someone a suggestion that cost them a chunk of change to only achieve mediocre results.
No worries man, I wouldn't blame you, I was just saying I take everything with a grain of salt and what you suggested sounded like a very good idea. How it will affect my vehicle is a variable, no two engines respond exactly the same and I know this I mean all things can change how my truck would react including my part of the countries climate and all that. Well in short no worries, but uh about how much did you have to spend for all the stuff you got? I'm very interested in doing the same thing.
