squealing serpintene

Howdy!
and happy mother's day!
I have a question in regard to the water pump pulley. Soo nice and smooth too. The 88 pickup seems to drip a few drops of oil or anti-freeze. But that is to be expected for an engine with over 225,000 miles on it! Although every so often I need to remove the belt as the water pump pulley is slipping due to that oil.
Is there a method in roughing up the pulley's face without damaging any serpentine belt? Or is there another idea in regard to the belt itself?
Even in rain somedays the belt starts sqealing in protest of driving in a downpour. heh
Usually I remove the belt and clean the surface of the waterpump pulley with a rag and a solvent. Then pop the belt back in place. Sounds soo much better!
thanks!

I have read somewhere to get some sand paper and rough up your pulley a bit with it. Makes it grab better.

No problem. Let us know how it turns out. Also, is your belt tight? How old is it? Make sure all your pulleys are clean. Good luck!

yep I took the belt off and cleaned each pulley. Even wiped the belt with a rag. Thot of purchasing a new belt too, however knowing that it may be the same sqeal with a new belt is real possible...(murphy's law?) eheh.
planning a 2600 mile trip out west next week with the truck. Round trip that is. Man! I checked the deals for rental cars and they maybe cheaper to use however most of these rental companies have a rule that I can't take their vehicle out of the 5 state area around Minnesota. hmmm. .20 per mile if they somehow found out!
Cheaper then and peace of mind to take the old truck...

thanks!
take care

How old is the belt? Just for the heck of it, I would change the belt especially since you are going on a trip. They are around $20-$30 or less. Keep the old belt behind your seat in case you have a problem. They are easy enough to change so keep the tools you need with you as well. But, that's just what I would do. Have fun on your trip!

hi matt,
yep your right. I think I have at least 2 belts behind the seat, However a new one would be good too. And I have all that space for the gear needed just in case .. y'know. heh
Kind of looking forward to the trip! Usually I am riding a motorcycle, but this time decided to take the truck and then my wife can come along too.
thanks again!

If your tensioner is over 100k old, you might think of replacing that also.

I had the same problem which ended up being several things combined, my belt was old and cracked, my tensioner needed replacing, and the genious who owned my truck before me told me he sprayed WD-40 on it.. Good idea. So i sanded the pullies and replaced the belt and tensioner and all was well.

1. Non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner. Spray it on with the engine running (hold your breath, don't get it in your eyes).

2. Try changing your belt-tensioner pulley. I was battling serpentine squeal for a couple years until I changed the tensioner. No more squeal. ('90 F150 302).

3. Leave the belt off. No A/C, waterpump, smog pump, alternator, P/S, but hey, you can still make it a few miles...

yep I have looked at that tensioner and the little pointer is right in the middle of its wear indication. However maybe that guage is off a leetle bit,eh? Well I have often wondered why the automotive industry is still into belts! My waterpump on the bike is on the same shaft as the oilpump... just on the outside of the oilpan... and the alternator is spun on the back of the flywheel. Course A/C works great on the bike ... in the winter! hehe
thanks guys!
