I have a 2002 F250supercab shortbed with a 5.4 litre and 3.73's in the truck. I recently put a BDS 6" lift kit on there and have noticed alot of powerloss especially going up a small hill with the cruise on, it downshifts alot. Also when I go to pass a slower car the truck does not take off like it use to,IO have been told a few different things to gearing my truck, I have heard go with 4.10's and I have also heard go with 4.56's. I dont want to sacrifce any more gas mileage than I already have, I am down to about 9-10 running 70 on the highway. I have heard that the 4.56's should actually take the gas mileage back up to stock, and then some people have told me that I will loose more mileage, I hope someone can help me out with this choice, I have the auto trans also. Thanks
Hey thanks for the info I saw that you had larger tires on your truck also, How is the gas mileage with those tires? If I swap out the 3.73's for 4.56's will this increase my mileage back to stock or hurt it more? Thanks

I would guess your mileage will decrease a little more but you won't be downshifting as much. You'll never get back to stock mileage with a lifted truck.
If its gas mileage your looking for put it back stock and get a toyota 4cyl. I have a F250 01 CC 4X4 LB Auto 5.4L W/4.56 gears and 315s I have power again! Look for my POST about pulling the Tractor/Truck Pull Sled. It doesn't shift out on the over passes with cc on any more. This site is what helped me decide on the 4.56 gears and it is the only way to go. The 4.30s may do just fine for you but I'm glad I didn't go that way. If you pull any trailer think hard on the 4.56s.

On a good day, I get about 11mpg downhill with a tail wind. If you want to play, you got to pay.
One more thing, with a 6" lift, one day you may want to run a larger tire than the 315 and the 4.56 gears will keep you up to speed with a little larger tire. I say "change-em once"
I agree on the 4.56's with 35's and the 5.4 engine in your Superduty truck. 4.30's would be acceptable too, but for towing and offroading, I think you'll like the 4.56 better, and your mileage should increase some after the gear change with iether ratio, since you are taxing the engine now and having to put your foot in it more than you will with the lower (numerically higher) ratios you're considering. I run 4.56 with 33's in a 6500 lb truck powered by a little 351. Changing from 3.55 to 4.56 was a world of difference in power and an improvement in mileage as well, except for on the freeway, but that's only because I don't have overdrive. If you're planning to go with 37's in the future, then go with a 4.88 ratio instead of the 4.56, especially if you do any towing.
