Found a good canidate for my tow vehicle (Ford Shuttle Bus) with a Power Stroke Diesel. Has 4:10 rear end and Dual rear wheels.
My question is:
What's a good RPM for good economy?
She's got good torque and the price is definitely right. Would probably gut the cat, K&N, and maybe a simple performance upgrade to improve the torque and milage. Any thoughts?
I haven't had my truck too long, but I do have some pertinent info on this subject. I've had reason over the past three weeks to take the same freeway trip twice, so I conducted an experiment. First trip, 350 miles at 2000 rpm, 69 mph = 19.3 mpg. Second trip, (yesterday) 350 miles at 2200 rpm, 76 mph = 17.2 mpg. I've heard that 2000 rpms is the magic number for maximum fuel economy, and what I've discovered seems to back that up.
I hope this helps.
I recently took a 1300 mile trip and got 20mpg at almost 2500rpm. I have 3.54 rear end and do not have an over drive (I would like one). I did have a tail wind. The best prior to that was 19mpg.
