i have an explorer(98) with 4.0 sohc. i donot know much about non distributor vehicles, does it matter which spark plug goes where?
i think i may have 5 and 6 backwards?
It matters where they go if they are still stock plugs from the factory. The platinum electrode is different on the plugs for the left and right banks. Since you have possibly switched numbers 5 & 6, then it dosen't matter in your case, since the plugs are on the same bank.
Yes, there are two different plugs if they are factory. They only put the platinum one one side of the plug; tip or side electrode. If you can save 60 cents a vehicle, why not. Replacements are double platinum electrode so it doesn't matter. You can switch 5-1, 6-2, 4-3 at the coil and it doesn't matter. Switching wires 5 & 6 does.

It does matter if you switch 5-1, 6-2, or 4-3, because the OEM plug will be getting the wrong polarity spark, and electrode erosion will be a problem!! You are correct, however, if the plugs have been replaced with double platinum plugs...
