The gas gauge on my '97 Exp abruptly failed low (i.e., empty) recently. The digital "miles to empty" function still works. I took it to the dealer and they wanted to replace the instrument cluster for something like $500. I suspect that there is simply an open circuit somewhere in the system. I was not impressed with the service manager at this particular dealership, as the focus seemed to be on swapping parts rather than taking the time to think through the problem.
Does anyone have experience with troubleshooting this issue?
Power to the cluster from fuse #29 (5 amp) on the red/yellow wire to pins #11 and #12, circuit #29, pin #10, yellow/white wire to sender, through sender to ground at G201, left side of cowl behind dash. S298 is the splice from the sender signal to the overhead computer. If the overhead is still functional, the problem is either the cluster or the wiring from the splice to the cluster, between the grey 35 pin connector under the hood and the back of the cluster.
it seems as though bad gas is contaminated with somthing that is ruining the ceramic fuel sensors it is a widespread occurance it is affecting all vehicles see my thread
I had trouble with my 02,s gauge accracy. Finally one day it was showing 1/8 tank, fuel light was not on, but it ran dry. The dealer replace the sending unit. fixed.
I understand there is some bad gas in the northern KY and farther north that contains too much sulpher and is damaging gas systems. This was on CNN I think, last night.
